What to Do After You Get Recognised
DPIIT recognition is the starting point, not the finish line. Six things to action next:
- Apply for the 80-IAC tax deduction via the IMB. DPIIT recognition alone doesn't grant this; it's a separate filing with its own turnover and entity-type conditions (see Benefits above).
- File your trademark at the 50% DPIIT rebate: see Trademark Registration.
- File patents at the 80% rebate.
- Activate self-certification under the applicable labour and environmental laws.
- Register on GeM (Government e-Marketplace) for public procurement access: see GeM registration.
- Check Seed Fund eligibility through a DPIIT-approved incubator.
Startup India vs Other Registrations — How They Compare
Most eligible startups hold MSME / Udyam, GST Registration, and DPIIT registration simultaneously. They solve different problems and aren't mutually exclusive.
What Is Startup India Registration?
Startup India Registration means obtaining DPIIT recognition: a certificate from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade classifying your entity as an official "startup". It's a status applied for after incorporation, not a way to incorporate, and recognition alone does not grant the income-tax holiday. That requires a separate certificate (see below).
You need an existing Private Limited Company, LLP, One Person Company, registered Partnership Firm, or Cooperative Society before you can apply for DPIIT recognition. Recognition doesn't replace your annual filings either; you'll still need ROC annual compliance to stay in good standing.
Startup India Registration — Quick Facts
Who Qualifies
An entity qualifies for DPIIT recognition if it meets all of the following.
Entity type
Private Limited Company, LLP, One Person Company, registered Partnership Firm, or Cooperative/Multi-State Cooperative Society. Sole proprietorships and HUFs are not eligible.
Age
Up to 10 years from incorporation (20 years for Deep Tech startups).
Turnover
Below ₹200 crore in any financial year since incorporation (₹300 crore for Deep Tech).
Innovation
Working on innovation, development, or improvement of products/services/processes, or a scalable model with high job/wealth-creation potential.
Original entity
Not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
Deep Tech Startups — 20 Years, ₹300 Crore
DPIIT's standard recognition window is 10 years and ₹200 crore turnover. Startups classified as Deep Tech get an extended 20-year window and a ₹300 crore turnover cap instead.
What typically qualifies as Deep Tech: ventures built on artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum computing, space technology, robotics, and advanced materials: technology where the core value is proprietary R&D rather than a business-model or distribution innovation.
How classification works: DPIIT determines Deep Tech status as part of the recognition review, not through self-declaration. Applicants seeking this classification should expect to file additional supporting documentation (typically deeper technical write-ups, IP filings or applications in progress, and evidence of R&D spend) beyond what a standard application requires.
If you're building in one of these categories, our team can review whether you qualify for the extended window before you file. Talk to a CA — free eligibility check

Why Startup India Applications Get Rejected
Most rejections trace to three causes: an ineligible entity type, exceeding the turnover or age limit, or an innovation write-up too generic to prove genuine innovation or scalability.
- Applying as a sole proprietorship or an entity formed by restructuring an existing business
- Turnover or incorporation age outside the DPIIT limits
- An innovation statement that reads like a generic business plan instead of a specific problem-solution case
- Missing or inconsistent supporting documents (incorporation certificate, PAN, director details)

Your entity must be a Private Limited Company, LLP, One Person Company, registered Partnership Firm, or Cooperative Society, incorporated within the last 10 years (20 for Deep Tech), with turnover below ₹200 crore (₹300 crore for Deep Tech), and working on innovation or a scalable business model. It must not be formed by splitting or restructuring an existing business.
DPIIT does not charge a government fee for recognition itself. StartBusiness's all-inclusive package, covering eligibility review, documentation, and filing, is ₹5,000 + GST, with no hidden charges.
Yes, the DPIIT recognition application itself carries no government fee. Any cost you pay a consultant is a professional service fee for eligibility screening, drafting the innovation statement, and handling the filing correctly the first time.
No. DPIIT recognition and the Section 80-IAC tax deduction are separate. The tax deduction requires a further application to the Inter-Ministerial Board (IMB), is capped at ₹100 crore turnover (not ₹200 crore), applies only to entities incorporated between 1 April 2016 and 1 April 2030, and is available only to Private Limited Companies and LLPs.
With complete documentation, StartBusiness's end-to-end service typically takes 15–20 working days, covering eligibility check, business write-up, filing, and DPIIT's review. DPIIT itself has no fixed statutory SLA; incomplete or generic innovation statements are the most common cause of delay.
No. Sole proprietorships and HUFs are not eligible for DPIIT recognition. Private Limited Companies, LLPs, One Person Companies, registered Partnership Firms, and Cooperative Societies are eligible, provided they meet the age, turnover, and innovation criteria.
The Startup India Certificate is the official DPIIT recognition document confirming your entity's startup status. It's issued through the Startup India portal after your application and innovation write-up are reviewed and approved, and is downloadable from your registered portal account.
Most rejections happen because the entity type is ineligible (such as a sole proprietorship), the turnover or age limit is exceeded, or the innovation write-up is too generic to demonstrate genuine innovation or a scalable business model. A specific, evidence-backed write-up materially reduces rejection risk.
